SEO gets you ranked in a list of links. AEO gets your content pulled out as a direct answer. GEO gets your brand named and cited inside an AI-generated answer. They overlap, but they are not the same job, and the shift matters for how you invest.
SEO: ranking in the list
Search engine optimization is about earning a spot in the ten blue links. The user still chooses and clicks. Keywords, backlinks, and page speed all serve that goal. SEO is not dead, but it is no longer the whole game.
AEO: becoming the answer
Answer engine optimization is about structuring content so a machine can lift a clean, direct answer from it. Think clear question-and-answer formats, definitions up top, and FAQ markup. AEO is what wins featured snippets and voice answers.
GEO: getting cited by the AI
Generative engine optimization is the newest layer. AI assistants read the web, decide who is credible, and write one answer that names a few brands. GEO is the work of being one of those brands: legible structure, consistent entity facts, third-party reinforcement, and evidence an AI can trust.
What actually changes
The big shift is from ranking to being chosen. In search, you compete for position. In AI answers, you compete for inclusion, and there are far fewer slots. That raises the bar on accuracy and authority. It also means the fundamentals still matter: a site that is fast, legible, and consistent does well across all three. GEO does not replace SEO. It sits on top of it.
