Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of structuring your content and data so that AI assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity can find, understand, and cite your brand when they answer a question. If SEO is about ranking in a list of links, GEO is about being the answer.
What GEO actually is
AI assistants do not show ten blue links. They read the web, decide what is credible, and write a single answer. GEO is the work of making sure your site is legible to those systems: clear structure, machine-readable markup, consistent facts about who you are, and content written in a way an AI can lift and trust. Do it well and the assistant names you. Do it poorly and it names someone else.
What GEO is not
GEO is not keyword stuffing, and it is not a trick. It is not the same as chasing a featured snippet. And it is not a one-time fix. AI systems change, your competitors move, and visibility has to be maintained. GEO is a discipline, the way SEO became a discipline fifteen years ago.
Why it matters now
More people ask an AI before they open a search engine. When they do, the assistant recommends a short list. If you are not on it, you never get the click, the call, or the chance. For financial institutions especially, where trust and accuracy decide everything, being represented correctly by AI is not optional.
